On Growing Up Tough
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (August, 1983)
Author: Taylor Caldwell
Average review score:

The best Taylor Caldwell book, the best book, period.
This fun little book does not have all of the descriptive language from her other best selling books. Rather, we are treated to objective even blunt observations about growing up tough in her particular hhousehold. Why did the teacherexplain ethnic differences to the children and nothing was ever the same for them again? A version of Mrs. Buttons lives on, donating clothing to charity while snipping the useful buttons for her own use. And when a social worker wants to know how bad things have become at home, of course you "crank one up" truth is relative here, until the neighborhood policeman checks out the parental neglect and lack of food in the house and finds neither.

On Growing Up Tough: An Irreverent Memoir
Published in Paperback by Devin-Adair Pub (April, 1989)

Favorite by Taylor Caldwell, Favorite book, period
This book is a little bit different from her usual descriptive style, it is very direct, to the point and resonates beautifully with her readers. Yes, it is irreverent, also poignant as it relates childhood experiences that shaped this wonderful author. Only Taylor Caldwell could tell this story and tell it so well. We might call hers a dysfunctional family, and as a friend always tells me, "It can make you bitter or it can make you better. This is not a Polyanna tale that glosses over the bad. Rather this is a humorous little book that shares what went on along with exactly what Taylor Caldwell thought of what went on. I love the passage where she is asked to describe the abuse she suffers at the hands of her parents, and so she "cranks one up." And "Mrs. Buttons" still exists today.

On the Plantation: A Story of a Georgia Boy's Adventures During the War
Published in Paperback by University of Georgia Press (December, 1980)
Authors: Joel Chandler Harris, Erskine Caldwell, and E. W. Wedward Wind Kemble

One of the 200 Most Important Confederate Books
One of the 200 Most Important Confederate Books for the Reader, Researcher and Collector. Richard Barksdale Harwell Author of In Tall Cotton As listed in In Tall Cotton: [This is] a fictional treatment of Harris' early teen-age years as printer's devil for The Countryman, a remarkable country paper roughly modeled after The Spectator that was published during the war years by Joseph Addison Turner at Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia. Harris dedicated On the Plantation to Turner and says in an "Introductory Note": "Some of my friends who have read in serial form the chronicles that follow profess to find in them something more than an autobiographical touch. Be it so. It would indeed be difficult to invest the commonplace character of Joe Maxwell [i.e., Harris] with the vitality that belongs to fiction. Nevertheless, the lad himself, and the events which are herein described, seem to have been born of a dream. That which is fiction pure and simple in these pages bears to me a stamp of truth, and that which is true reads like a clumsy invention. In this matter it is not for me to prompt the reader. He must sift the fact from the fiction and label it to suit himself."

The Origin of the Gods
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1995)
Author: Richard S. Caldwell

Cool for mythology fans
This book was required reading for a college class I took given by Caldwell. I thought it was great, especially if you don't have any background in psychology. Hesiod's Theogony is a good reference for some of the stories, but it's not a requirement. Fans of Greek myth will enjoy the deconstructions and parallels in other myths. Caldwell's class was one of my favorite in college.

A great Web guide!!
This is an excellent guide to the web. Just the sort of book we've all been waiting for! Easy to understand and highly informative. It tells you in straightforward terms how the world wide web developed from the early Internet days, how it works and you can use it in many different ways. For example, it points you towards very useful web sites on health, education and business.

I passed my copy onto my young nephew. He was fascinated by it and has now begun to use the web himself to help him with his studies and find out lots of info about his favourite sports!

Physics - The Root Science With Applications
Published in Textbook Binding by Archimedes Publication Limited (01 October, 1995)
Authors: Wallace G. Caldwell, Patricia Goubil-Gambrell, and Donald F. Savage
Average review score:

This is a flexible, algebra-based, readable text.
This is not a cursory review of Physics - The Root Science with Applications. I have used the textbook to teach students for more than five years as it was being developed by the authors and in its final form for publication.

I am a biology major with a minor in chemistry and Spanish and certification in physics. I have found the text to lend itself to use by someone with my background.

Flexibility is one of the many strong points of the text. There are a sampling of lab suggestions and problem samples in the text. There are references to supplement the material.

I have been pleased with the successful motivation of students by Chapter 2 entitled Applications of Physics to Science, Technology, and Society which demonstrate the usefulness of physics of such purposes as RADAR, Sports Medicine, and about a dozen other topics.

I have found Physics - The Root Science to meet the needs of both myself and my students. It is a text that I can use to successfully introduce the world of physics to a variety of students with a variety of needs and backgrounds. It is one of the few texts that I have seen that I can cover in a year, that doesn't overwhelm, that does a masterful job of helping me cover what must be covered to prepare my students for further course work, both in physics and in other sciences.

This is best book on Texas-style Bar-B-Que I've ever seen. The slow-smoked brisket recipe is probably a closely guarded trade secret in Luling...

Principles of Accounting
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Company (February, 1990)
Authors: Anderson, Belverd E. Needles, and Caldwell
Average review score:

Great intro to accounting
I liked reading this book for my accounting 101 class. The text is clear, well organized and well written. The typography makes liberal use of color, which makes reading _much_ easier when compared to a monochrome textbook. There are copious examples, illustrations and exercises. The book comes with a workbook (purchased separately) which contains template pages to write in your answers (trust me, you will need it). All chapters are grounded in current reality -- the authors make a point of tying the concepts to real-life situations.

On the cons, the 2002 edition deals with 2000 data -- their production process needs to be speeded up.

I think that a thorough review of this text will give the reader an excellent start in basic accounting.
